Amy Maxwell was born on May 16, 1934, and was the youngest of 12 children, born to the union of Eugene and Paulina Dunn in Marianna, Arkansas. Her siblings, James, John, Wilbert, Levi, Helen, Elizabeth, Mary, Alice, Anna, Pearlean, and Ozella all preceded her in death. Amy migrated to Chicago in her late teens and wed Charles Lenwood Maxwell at the age of 21. Together they raised 7 children, all but one of her children still live in the Chicagoland Area. Amy was a homemaker until her late thirties. She worked at Montgomery Wards, Oscar Mayer’s, and retired from Entenmanns at the age of 62.
Amy is survived by all of her children; Gregory Maxwell (Rick Watkins), Cynthia Maxwell (Guillermo), Diane Scott, Valerie Maxwell Sofiyea, Charles Maxwell Jr. (loving daughter Elizabeth Maxwell ), Eugene Maxwell ( Danielle Maxwell) and Roderick Maxwell (Monique Maxwell); 11 grandchildren, Latwoine Maxwell, Tiffany Palmer, Darnisha Scott, Michael Allen Benson, Ebiere Sofiyea, Oweikimi Sofiyea, Danielle Maxwell, Madeline Amy Maxwell, Meghan Valerie Maxwell, Rashonda Maxwell, and Alicia Maxwell; and 6 great grandchildren: Kendall Maxwell, Jacquelyn Scott, Aubrey Scott, Aubriana Scott, Jasmine Scott, Daseon King Maxwell and Lashaun Eugene Smith, Jaylen Benson, Michael Jr. Benson, Mason Benson, Melanie Benson, and Messiah Benson. Auntie Amy also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who she tremendously adored.
Amy was a strong, witty, straight forward woman who was filled with laughter and enjoyed spending time with her family. She also the person you consulted when you needed support, advice, and comfort. During holiday festivities Amy was quiet, observant, and smiled at her families bantering and noise. We especially remember her laughing with her sister O’Zella and speaking in “Pig Latin,” when she didn’t want us to hear their conversation.
These are some of the qualities that Amy exhibited i.e., love of family, her desire for all her children to stay healthy, concern for our well-being, and especially her laughter is what we grew to love and respect.
Although Amy has gone to meet her father in heaven, her memory will forever remain in the hearts and minds of all she loved and all who loved her. She left an indelible mark on all her children and extended family because of her compassion, strength, and love. We will miss her laughter, wit, support, and unconditional love.
