Bernice Slater Obituary

Bernice Crozier Slater was born on June 12, 1933, in Memphis Tennessee, to George Crozier and Carrie Grandberry. She was the second child of three girls-Louise and Mary Frances-and a stepsister, Georgia Mae. She was baptized at an early age.

She attended La Rose elementary school and Booker T Washington High school. She loved attending school and working with her father. In 1950, Bernice moved to Chicago, where she met Watson Slater, who preceded her in death. They were married in 1957 and had four daughters: Sabrina, Valerie, Darlene, and Lavetta. She also became a mother to her niece, Carolyn Bledsoe, and great niece, Angela Bledsoe, whom she raised from an infant. Both preceded her in death.

After her daughters were born, Bernice converted to the Catholic faith. Her journey started at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where she worked as a teacher's aide. She then continued her education at Malcolm X College with a degree in child development. In 1998 she retired from St. Mel 's Day Care and opened her own home day care center Bernice received numerous awards from the Archdiocese of Chicago. She enjoyed working with children teaching them arts and crafts, reading, and writing. In later years she worked at her daughter and son-in-law 's real estate company as a receptionist.

Bernice was a faithful parishioner at St. Agatha Church and then St. Simon of Cyrene Parish. She enjoyed arts and crafts, traveling with her family, and playing with pets. She was a avid reader. Spending time with her family was one of her favorite pastimes. Bernice lived a blessed long life before she peacefully passed away on February I0, 2025 at home with loved ones surrounding her.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents George Cozier and Carrie Crozier and siblings Louise Bledsoe and Georgia Mae. She leaves to mourn her passing, a sister Mary Frances Bledsoe; daughters Sabrina Edwards (Jerry who preceded her in death); Valerie Slater (Billy); Darlene Slater, and Lavetta Beauzile (Philippe); grandchildren Tracey Edwards, Christopher Slater (Eboni), and Cody Bledsoe; great grandchildren Christopher Slater Jr., Truly Slater, and D' Angel Slater, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces/nephews, cousins, and fiends.
