Cherry "Mae" Albritton Obituary

We give thanks to the life of Mrs. Cherry “Mae” Albritton who passed away on January 13, 2022, in Maywood, IL. She was 74 years old when she left her earthly family to be with her Heavenly Family.

Cherry was born on September 5, 1947, in Clarksdale, MS to the union of James Selma “Susta” Rockett and William “Bill” Allen. She was adopted by Charles Townsend when she was 2 years old. Cherry was also blessed to have two mothers as she was raised by her mother “Susta” and her grandmother, “Minee”.

In 1956, Cherry and her family migrated to Chicago’s westside when she was 9 years old. She attended John Marshall High School where she developed her passion for dance and was part of the Modern Dance Team. It was also at Marshall HS where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband of 52 yrs, Raymond Albritton.

Cherry married her high school sweetheart, Raymond Albritton on September 20th 1969 in Chicago, IL.  The couple had 2 children together, Rhonda Fatima and Raymond “Ray Ray” Albritton Jr.  The couple left Chicago in 1987 and moved to Broadview, IL where they continued to live until Cherry’s homecoming.

Cherry graduated Marshall HS in 1966 and shortly thereafter, she began her career as a Customer Service Representative at Illinois Bell Telephone Phone Company in Chicago, IL. Cherry had an illustrious career at Illinois Bell which later merged and became Ameritech/AT&T. Her colleagues were like family and she developed strong and lifelong friendships during her time there.  After 28 years of loyal service with Ameritech/AT&T, Cherry retired in 1994.

Cherry was a very spiritual and loving person. She was baptized and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at a very young age. She was an unapologetic Christian and enjoyed reading and discussing the Bible. She also enjoyed discussing politics and kept herself

informed of the world around her. She loved dancing and listening to all types of music, especially old-school R&B (dusties). She was a skilled and elegant “stepper” and would love to grace the dance floors with her husband and forever dance partner, Raymond.

It was no secret that Cherry had an enormous love for her family and friends. She loved spending time with her family, creating delicious meals, and visiting new restaurants.  Her hospitality was unmatched, whether it was her hosting a family gathering or attending other outings, you were embraced warmly with a smile.

Cherry “Mae” Albritton was a caring and devoted wife, nurturing mother, loving grandmother, caring sister, compassionate aunt, and loyal friend.

Cherry leaves to mourn her husband, Raymond Albritton, Sr.; daughter, Rhonda Albritton; son, Raymond Albritton, Jr.; stepdaughter, Vicky M. Dobbins; and granddaughter, Adia “Ida” Njie.

Cherry was 1 of 13 children. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved grandparents; Brothers, Chales L. Townsend, and Andre Williams; sisters, Dorris J. Ford, Mary Coleman, and Jessie L. Jones, who all preceded her in death.

Cherry also leaves to mourn 7 siblings, Ike Rockett, Selma Williams, Winford Williams,  LaSharon Williams, DeShelia (Fabian) Williams, LaDonna (Tracy) Ison, and Jake Allen. She will be immensely missed by her sisters-in-law, Colleen “Connie” Embry, and Barbara (John) Steele; and her dearest friends Dorothy Harrison, Erma Carter, and Edna Boyd. Cherry has a special place in her heart for her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends.

Cherry was selfless and very giving to all those around her. She had a big heart and her love for family and friends had no bounds. She was gentle and so kind to not just the people around her, but to animals too. She will be truly missed!
