Sis. Dorothy Jean Jones was born on July 31, 1951, in Oakland, Mississippi, to Hattie Jones and Walter Jones, Sr., both of whom preceded her in death.
At an early age, Dorothy accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She lived her life with joy and grace, sharing her beautiful smile, love of singing and dancing, and a servant's heart with everyone she encountered. She was raised in Oakland, Mississippi, alongside her nine siblings: Sadie Mae, Walter Jr., Mattie B., Mildred, Minnie, Frank, Vera, Earlene, and Curtis. Dorothy graduated from Coffeeville High School, earning her high school diploma and preparing for the next chapter of her life.
After graduation, Dorothy moved to Detroit, Michigan, with her brother Frank. She later relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where she lived with her sister Vera. While in Chicago, she began working at Signal, where she met her cherished best friend, Emma Avant, and Justice Prince Kumi-Darfour. The friendship she formed with Emma became a lifelong bond spanning more than four decades. Dorothy's relationship with Justice blossomed, and together they built a loving family. In 1982, they welcomed their first son, Julius Kumi-Darfour, and in 1985, they welcomed their second son, Justice Kumi-Darfour, Jr.
In 1991, Dorothy found her church home at Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Shelvin Jerome Hall. She became a faithful and devoted member, serving as Sunday School Secretary and as a member of the Usher Board. Most recently, she served as President of Usher Board #1 under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Reginald E. Bachus, the church's current pastor. Her unwavering commitment to her faith and church family reflected her deep love for God and her passion for serving others.
On August 16, 2026, after spending a joyful weekend surrounded by loved ones at the Scott Metcalf Family Reunion and creating cherished memories with her grandchildren, the Lord called Dorothy home. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Sadie Mae, Walter Jr., Mattie B., Minnie, Frank, and Earlene.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her sisters, Mildred Jones and Vera Austin (Bennie); her brother, Curtis Jones; her sons, Julius Kumi-Darfour, Sr. (Quanisha) and Justice “Jay” Kumi-Darfour, Jr. (Loreal); her beloved grandchildren, Jaida, Justice "LJ," Jordan, and Julius Jr. "Cam-Cam"; Bonus children: Lawyer Darfour (Jenny), Colin Darfour, Golden Seabright (Nick), Kojo Kumi-Darfour, Sterling Kumi-Darfour; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and dear friends. Her legacy of faith, love, service, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
