Hattie early education began at Lexington Attendance School in Lexington, MS, where she graduated and later moved to Maywood, IL, and continued her education at Debbie School of Beauty Culture in Chicago, IL, where she became a licensed beautician.

After moving to Maywood, Hattie became a member of the Garden of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Johnnie Brown, and now currently Pastor Johnnie Haynie.

Hattie met the love of her life, of more than fifty years, Lacy Brewer, and was united in Holy Matrimony. To this union one daughter was born, Tara Latrice Brewer, who preceded her in death.

She also was preceded in death by her three brothers, Cleotha (Sonny) Rule, John Wesley Rule, and John Rule; two brothers-in-law, JT (Tomboy) Brewer, and Larry Brewer; and one sister-in-law, Carlena (Bay Bay) Graves.
