Helen Binford was born on June 27, 1931, in Fargo, Arkansas, the youngest child of West Sr. and Lucille Jones. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age at Union Baptist Church in Fargo where the roots of her Christian journey began. She joined Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastorship of Pastor Amos Waller when she moved to Chicago, and shortly thereafter followed Pastor Mack McCollum to New Home Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a faithful and devoted member until God called her to eternal rest.
Helen’s early education began at Zent Elementary School then Marion Anderson High School, where she developed the discipline and determination that would guide her throughout life. She went on to earn a dietary certification from Fargo Agricultural School, a testament to her commitment to lifelong learning and personal growth.
Helen’s professional journey was defined by an unwavering work ethic and commitment to growth. She began her career in a factory, where she dedicated seven years to hard work before earning a front-office position through determination and perseverance. Ultimately, she built a lasting career as a bookkeeper with W.F. Hall Printing Company, where she remained until her retirement. Her progression from the factory floor to the front office was not merely a change in role; it was a reflection of her ambition and dedication to advancing herself.
Helen embodied quiet strength and humility. She never sought the spotlight or said much, but her actions spoke volumes; always giving her best and doing more than what was expected. Her love showed up in her warm smile, thoughtful gestures, or in a plate full of her famous homemade biscuits and fried fish.
She was an avid traveler who explored both domestic and international destinations, enjoying memorable trips to places like Hawaii and the Bahamas. She was a classy dresser also and a church hat regularly crowned her head on Sundays.
Helen could play cards with the best of them, relished her horse track wins, and loved watching all sports, with a special affinity for baseball, football, and basketball.
Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Binford; her beloved children, Mary Catherine Bishop and Willie Mae Whimper; as well as her parents, Lucille Jones and West Jones, Sr.; and all of her siblings, Catherine (Eddie) Stephens, West (Margree) Jones, Jr., George (Bessie) Jones, Julice (LeeEster) Jones, Roosevelt Jones, and Henry (McGurtha Sr.) Jones.
Though her family circle in heaven has grown, Helen leaves behind a powerful legacy here on earth, one built on love, faith, and strength. She is survived by her three granddaughters, Shanita (Jimmy) Akintonde, Lakecia Whimper, and Danielle Bishop; five great-grandchildren, Kelceion Sr., Jimi, Anthony, A’Maya, and Chloe; five great-great-grandchildren, Na’ziyah, Kelceion Jr., Angel, Kashmir, and Ava; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Today, we remember and celebrate the life of Mrs. Helen Binford. A virtuous woman whose life was a quiet yet powerful sermon of faith, love, and humility. She walked humbly with God, cherishing her family and living each day in peace and joy. Now, she has entered her eternal rest, free from pain and labor, rejoicing in the presence of the Lord. Her memory will forever live in the hearts of her family, church, friends, and community, all who were blessed to know her. May we honor her legacy by continuing to love, serve, and live with the same grace and humility that defined her life. Rest in peace, Helen Binford, thy good and faithful servant; your work here is done.
