In Loving Memory of Lorenz Quinton Black
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lorenz Q. Black, who passed away on March 3, 2025, at the age of 73. Lorenz Black was born on December 9, 1951, in Chicago, IL. Lorenz was the first of a set of twins to Samuel Quinton and Estella Black.
Lorenz graduated from St. Phillips High School in 1969 and received his associates degree from Malcom X College in Chicago. Soon after, he embarked on his remarkable career for over 30 years as a Pollution Control Technician for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
Lorenz was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor, neighbor and friend to many. He led a life full of love, dedication, and extraordinary achievements, and he was known for his unwavering commitment to his family. Lorenz's laughter was infectious, and he enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. He was truly the life of the party, always making everyone feel welcome and never meeting a stranger. Lorenz left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He loved bowling and considered himself an avid golfer. He was a masterful self-taught home improvement enthusiast. He could build it, paint it, fix it, you name it—there was not a project he could not take on.
Lorenz had a deep affection for his dogs, and he took immense pride in training them. His love for his canine companions was evident in the way he cared for them, ensuring they were well-behaved and happy. His dedication to his dogs was just another example of his nurturing and compassionate nature, which touched the lives of all who knew him. JD was his best FUR-ever friend, and he missed him greatly.
Lorenz was also known for the many meaningful relationships he had throughout his life. He cherished the company of his former wife and forever friend, Daisy Southward, his ace, Tamara Eston, and his longtime friend and companion, Jackie Reed. He also loved hanging with his fellas including Reggie “Coach” Smith, Bert Thurman and Angel Malave. In addition, he served as a father figure and mentor to his bonus son Jeramie Strickland and countless other young men in his community. His ability to form deep connections with others was a testament to his warm and loving nature.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Black, mother Estella Black, and brother-in-law Keith Brown. He is survived by his children, Nicole Black, Melissa Black and Lorenz Black (Kristle), as well as his stepson Chris Southward (Nina). His legacy lives on through his seven grandchildren, Jordan Black-Mathews, Madison Gardner, Marshall Gardner, Quentin Black, Keagan Black, Chrishelle Southward and Chyra Southward who all brought immense joy to his life. Lorenz is also remembered fondly by his siblings, Lorraine Upchurch (John), Bonita Chapman (Warren), Samella Brown, and Damien Freeman; his nieces and nephew, Sadonna Clarke (Henry), Jamel Upchurch (Jennifer), Keshauna Brown, Sionda Brown and Monica Chapman; his aunts, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
We remember our dad for his kindness, generosity, and the love he shared with all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
Rest in peace Dad.
