Murl Tyler, Jr. was born on December 27, 1957, at Cook County Hospital. He was raised by his mother, Frances Houston and stepfather, Willie Houston.
Murl confessed his hope in Christ at an early age and joined Broadview Baptist Church in 1974.
As a young boy, Murl attended Summer Elementary School until 1969, when he then relocated to Maywood, IL, and attended Roosevelt Elementary, and Proviso East High School, where he graduated in 1976.
