Sidney Elton Coleman Jr. was born on October 31, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, to the union of Sidney Sr. and Ida, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his in-law parents, Isaac and Mary, and was the second of seven siblings.
Sidney accepted Christ at an early age. After leaving Farragut High School, he chose to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. As a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Sidney served his country with honor and integrity.
Following his military service, Sidney married Rosa, the love of his life. Together they built a beautiful family and shared 51 wonderful years of marriage.
Sidney was a hardworking man who lived a life defined by courage, strength and perseverance. He cared deeply for his family and worked as a Park Ranger, CTA Bus Driver, and Cook County Correctional Sheriff. However, the job he loved most was serving and protecting as a Chicago Police Officer, a position he held with pride and dedication for 29 years until his retirement.
On Sunday, October 26, 2025, God called Sidney from labor to reward and whispered, “Peace be thine.” He prepared a place for him in His garden.
Sidney leaves behind to cherish his memory (and his memory lives on) by his devoted wife, Rosa, and his five beloved children: Katrina (Gadiel), Latonya (Shawn), Sydney Tierra, Sidney III (Judy), and Daryl. He was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren: Felicia (Corey), Twjuan (Jamesia), Jerimiah, Keshanna, Kiara, Nylah, Shemar, Dariana, Izayah, Alonzo, Jordan, Gizelle, Shania and Raen, and a great-grandfather of 8.
He is also survived by 2 sisters: Diana and Joann; (on wife side) Diane, Sharon, Ella, Caroline, Alfreda, Jennifer and Regina; 4 brothers: Walter (Patrice), Bennie (Mary), Thomas (Tiffani) and Joel; (on wife side) George Jr.; along with a large circle of nieces, nephews- including his “best buddy” Jalen-, and many cousins and friends.
Sidney was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He brought a unique joy to everyone he met. His love for family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
He will be deeply and dearly missed, but his legacy of love, service, and faith will live on forever.
