Willie James Thomas Jr., affectionately known as "Huck" to his family, was born on August 25, 1960, to Juanita and Willie Thomas Sr. in Chicago, Illinois. He attended D.R. Cameron Elementary School, where he quickly became beloved by his peers. Even at a young age, Willie's talents and passions were evident. He excelled in playing multiple instruments such as the bassoon, clarinet, and saxophone, as well as in gymnastics, baseball, and male cheerleading.
After graduating from Lane Tech High School, Willie pursued higher education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. There, he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting with a minor in Latin. Following his graduation, Willie moved to Dallas, Texas, where he secured a job with Honeywell. After five years in Dallas, he returned to his hometown of Chicago, but his thirst for adventure led him to explore opportunities beyond his comfort zone.
Willie joined the finance department at UIC Hospital and later seized an opportunity to live and work in Germany. For two years, he immersed himself in the rich culture of Europe, taking in the beauty of the continent. However, his journey did not end there. Willie's next adventure took him to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he discovered his true calling – teaching languages. Fluent in German, Latin, English, and Spanish, Willie founded a language company and dedicated the rest of his days to nurturing young minds and helping his students develop a love for learning.
On December 9, 2023, Willie James Thomas Jr. was called home by the Lord to be reunited with his parents and older brothers, Eugene and John W. Love. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. Willie is survived by his sisters, Marice Hallback of Georgia and June Williams (Charita Williams) of Tampa, Florida, and his brothers Charles H. Thomas of Calumet City, Illinois, Andre Thomas (Vera) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jerry L. Thomas (Grace) of Dolton, Illinois, Johnnie Thomas of Chicago, Illinois, and Mario A. Thomas of Chicago, Illinois. He also leaves behind his cousin Cora Pollock of Indiana, and Eugene Pollock of Chicago Illinois, who held a special place in his heart. Willie's impact extends beyond his immediate family, as he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
Today, as we bid farewell to Willie James Thomas Jr., let us remember him for the joy he brought into our lives. Let us honor his memory by embracing his spirit of adventure, his love for learning, and his unwavering dedication to helping others. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace, dear Willie.
